I'm such a square

I desperately need knitting help!
Can somebody please explain to me what the hell "(With right side facing, slip stitches from first holder onto needle;) pick up stitch in each of 2 added on stitches at base of thumb" is supposed to mean?! (after re-reading it just now, it made more sense than the first 30 times I read it while trying to actually do it). That wasn't the most confusing part of the pattern, it was just where I gave up. See, I love to knit... More specifically, square stuff. So when I got it into my head to actually make something other than a scarf, blanket, or anything else that has any actual shape other than 4 corners, I got out my little book of stitches to look for a pattern for mittens. That is what I got. I was cruising along just fine until I hit the part that must have some words left out or something. So I went to the internet to look for a pattern. It said, "knit in the round" and I said, "next pattern". I have the needles to do it, I just have no idea how to use them. No matter how hard I try, I keep messing that particular method up. I think the circular length is too long (I sent The Boyfriend out to get some on a whim a few months back. You know there was no way I was going to stop making my square to get them myself.). Anyway, so every pattern I find is either using circular needles or stops instructing coherently once it gets to the thumb area. Or it could be that I taught myself how to knit so maybe that's why I have no idea what they're talking about and, for me, reading directions is usually a lot harder than just doing what they tell you to do. Anyway, if any of you veteran knitters could stop laughing at me long enough to direct me to a really simple mitten pattern (or a pattern that makes sense) or could try to explain the detailed in a vague way directions that I seem to keep running across (example: in reference to thumb: "knit to marker, slip these stitches onto stitch holder, add on one stitch, knit to marker, remove marker, turn; add one stitch, slip remaining stitches onto second stitch holder" could that be more confusing?!), it would be much appreciated (I know all the abbreviations, if that helps). I want mittens! Don't make me make them square!

**I tried really hard to work in a "spongebob squarehands" reference but I just couldn't do it. Damn.

**Why is it that "spongebob" came up on the spell check, but "squarehands" didn't?
