oh crap Remember me posting about waking up the other day not being able to take a breath? Well, for the last few days it's felt like there was something in the back of my throat every time I swallowed and I could not figure out why it felt like that. Then a little while ago, I realized that the little thing that hangs down in the back of the throat is swollen. That's not tonsils, is it? Anyway, then I realized that the reason I probably couldn't breathe when I woke up was because I was laying on my back and, if that thing was swollen, it was probably blocking my air. That is freakin' awesome. *Update - I found out that the hangy-down thing that I was talking about is called a uvula. Apparently the main purpose of the uvula is to close of the nasopharynx (back of the throat) when you are swallowing or speaking. The reasons it could be swollen are tonsillitis, bacterial or viral infections of the throat, allergies, and trauma. It's possible (but very rare) that it's swollen just because. Fun Fact About Uvulas: There is a college fraternity contest where much beer is drunk before going to sleep, then seeing who has the biggest uvula in the morning. There is apparently a relationship between uvula swelling and beer ingestion. Who the hell came up with that crappy ass drinking game?
